Mathison was the first director appointed when WEHI was first established in 1915.  He was then a military doctor at Gallipoli and was killed there.  His death was regarded as the greatest single loss talent to Australia of WWI.  The hollow figures symbolise the total potential of each individual. Each has reached some level of achievement but for various reasons they have not been able to fulfill their full potential.  Mathison leads and represents this group.
